Sometimes you start working on something, and then find that others are working on the same idea, often working from a different premise. Take a look at this article written by Michael Tiemann called Are we really wasting $1T USD annually? Michael argues that we are over-spending by that much annually, and has a downloadable paper in PDF format where he lays out his conclusions.
I haven't had a chance to read the paper, and check his numbers, but his basic conclusion is similar to my own. Michael Tiemann is the Vice President of Open Source Affairs at Red Hat Inc, as well as President of the Open Source Initiative.
